New Mexico's Creative Industries Division Launches with Statewide Inaugural Event

The New Mexico Creative Industries Division (CID), a state initiative established to bolster the growth and impact of creative sectors across the state, recently launched its inaugural event series. Held from June 3rd to June 9th, this ambitious endeavor unfolded as a dynamic showcase of talent, innovation, and the collaborative spirit that defines New Mexico's creative landscape.

A cornerstone of the week-long celebration was the Pop-Up @ Kearny, hosted in the historic Kearny school building in Raton. Slated for transformation into a cutting-edge XR training studio and media workforce development center, the Pop-Up offered a captivating glimpse into the space's promising future. The event drew an enthusiastic crowd, eager to witness the unveiling of this creative hub and participate in a diverse range of activities.

The Pop-Up @ Kearny served as a vibrant microcosm of New Mexico's creative ecosystem. Attendees were treated to eighteen interactive demonstrations led by seasoned professionals across various disciplines, including:

Green Screening & Virtual Reality by Ann Theis & Jose Lopez, introduced participants to the possibilities of immersive technologies.

Drone Cinematography by Ken Siggard, showcased the unique perspectives offered by aerial videography.

Safety Training by Patrick Crowley, emphasized the importance of safe practices in creative industries.

Cinematography by Letty Gallegos, explored the art of visual storytelling through camera techniques.

Practical Special FX by Melvin Prescott, where participants delved into the art of hands on effects and shooting simulation on film sets..

Student Film Screening by Christeana Piancino, showcased the emerging talent of young filmmakers.

Script Writing and Acting by James Cordova, illuminated the timeless power of story and performance in filmmaking.

Podcasting by Greg Hunter, offered insights into the world of audio storytelling and content creation.

Sound Design by Patrick Haight, explored the sonic dimension of storytelling and immersive experiences.

Foley Sound Design by Will Elder, demonstrated the techniques behind creating realistic sound effects in unexpected ways.

Costuming & Wardrobe by Sametta Jackson-Parker, showcased the artistry of character development through attire.

Old West Props & Weapons by Tom Morse, showcased the craftsmanship behind realistic props and weaponry.

Props & Set Design by Beki Laird, revealed the art of creating immersive environments for film and theater.

Hair & Makeup by Isabel Sintas (MUA), revealed the transformative power of cosmetics.

NM Local 480 Film Crafts by Elizabeth Marshall, provided insight into the union participation.

Gen AI for Artists by Zabe Holloway, discussed how to utilize AI as a tool in design alongside a virtual presentation of IP Rights for Artists by Max Hass, which provided essential guidance on intellectual property.

Kite Making by Mauricio Mendez, engaged participants in a hands-on exploration of traditional crafts.


Attendees were invited to contribute their ideas for renaming the historic Kearny building, underscoring the community-driven nature of the project. Additionally, participants could explore the demonstrations and enter a raffle for gift cards from local establishments such as Bruno’s Pizza and Wings, 111 Park Street Cafe, Gate City Craft Bar, Colfax Ale Cellar, 111 Park Espresso Bar, Pappas' Sweet Shop Restaurant, and K-Bobs Steakhouse Raton. Catering for the event was provided by 111 Park Espresso Bar & Cafe. AAA Septic Services ensured the availability of facilities, while Chrissy Piancino, Deb Sullivan, and Lisa Bradshaw offered invaluable administrative assistance.

A Statewide Celebration of Creative Industries

The Pop-Up @ Kearny represented just one facet of the CID's inaugural event series. Throughout the week, eleven live events and over fifty online presentations took place across New Mexico, engaging diverse communities and showcasing the breadth of creative talent within the state.

The establishment of the Creative Industries Division through House Bill 8 in 2023 and its official launch through this inaugural event series mark a significant milestone for New Mexico. The state's commitment to nurturing creative industries is evident in the wide array of programs and resources offered by the CID. From workforce development initiatives to funding opportunities and networking events, the division is dedicated to empowering artists, entrepreneurs, and businesses within the creative sector.
