Alan Birkelbach is a member of the Texas Institute of Letters, Western Writers of America, National Park Foundation, and The Academy of American Poets. He was appointed by the Texas Legislature as the 2005 Poet Laureate of Texas.

He is a Spur Award Winner, two-time international Indie Book Award Finalist, winner of North Texas Book Festival Award and a Pushcart Prize Nominee.
